George Walley’s highly popular ‘Wandjoo My Friend’ has an extra verse, welcoming 18 new animals ‘back to our home’.
A song for the Six Noongar Seasons was written by our Koorlong - Noongar songs in schools team - ‘Bibbulmun Bonar’. This has already proved a winner with koorlungas (children).

The new branding package, that Jo has been working on with Media on Mars, was unveiled on Monday night with many 'Ooohs' and 'Ahhhs'.

Kobi was inspired to suggest local birds to represent each entity of MM, since we started with the two koolbardi on the original logo..…’black and white can be together, free as bush birds on a branch.’

The karak was chosen for Koondarm - a striking bird for a remarkable 'young adult vocal collective.’

The djidi-djidi (willy wagtail, mischief bird) seemed appropriate for Koorlong and last year Bella Steadman drew a delightful logo which has been modified a little to sit with its mates in this circle.

You will see the yoowitj represents Kannajil (in truth). What better bird for community singing and yarning sessions!

Huge thanks to Ute and Sean at Media on Mars for their close attention to detail, to get our birds looking right for the jobs! We hope you feel proud of new branding for MM.
Madjitil Moornatag:madjitilmoorna.org.au,2005:Post/59059242019-09-26T18:05:16+08:002021-07-04T16:47:42+08:00Kobi's Award Nomination

Our Kobi Arthur Morrison has been nominated for the YACWA - The Mission Australia Cultural Endeavours Award 2019! This award recognises young people who have overcome disadvantage and/or made a significant contribution to the community through a cultural endeavour, including drama, visual arts, digital and/or technology, dance, debating, literary pursuits or music.

Madjitil Moorna Coordinator, Jo Randell, penned this letter of support for consideration by the Board of Selectors.

"When Kobi was 11 years old, he sometimes came to choir practice with his mother Della Rae Morrison.

The choir is Madjitil Moorna – Singers of Aboriginal Songs – a unique community choir for all ages and abilities, led

by Aboriginal performers. Della Rae was a founding Music Director and I

coordinated the project for Zig Zag Community Arts, Kalamunda. In 2011

the choir became incorporated and in 2014, Madjitil Moorna Inc gained

Deductible Gift Recipient status.

By the time Kobi was 15, he had fallen in love with the guitar and was

learning how to accompany the choir’s songs, by watching George Walley,

much-loved Noongar songwriter, performer and choir leader. He gradually

gained skill and confidence and in 2014 Madjitil Moorna began to pay him

very modestly, to accompany rehearsals and performances. He also began

writing his own beautiful songs.

Kobi always had big dreams. He could see that the choir was not only

enriching the lives of the singers of all abilities and backgrounds but also

shaping attitudes and building understanding amongst audiences across

WA, through the songs and shared experiences. He dreamt of starting his

own ‘offspring’ choir, for young people. With a friend, in 2016, he began

what has become Koondarm (The Dreaming) Choir. Adopting the same ethos

as Madjitil Moorna*, young people from all backgrounds and abilities are

welcome to join rehearsals and when ready, to perform.

(*See the Objectives of Madjitil Moorna on a separate page.)

Koondarm Choir is much-loved, performing at festivals and events, singing

songs from Madjitil Moorna’s repertoire - often with very creative adaptation

and Noongar translation – and some of Kobi’s own beautiful songs."

Polly's daughter, Kimmy Farmer, who is also Della Rae's dear cousin, requested that we sing at the end of the ceremony. Polly's family expressed the wish that the funeral be a celebration of Polly's life, with many stories told about the great marmaan (man) and his contribution to Aussie Rules Football, the wider community and most importantly, his family. So 35 of us went to work rehearsing a variation of the song Hello Dolly, in two part harmonies. With less than a week to bring this together, Della Rae and Kobi led the choir through a powerful and moving performance as Polly's body was led away for the final time.
Walyalup Kannajil have just finished our first term for 2019, and how moorditj it has been! Our first session on May 8 (Maaattee!) saw 34 members in attendance, and subsequent weeks saw an average of about 28 people coming along, including a few kwobidak koolangka! Everyone has just loved Kobi and his gentle ways, as well as engaging with our special guests, which have included Brendan Moore (Aboriginal Engagement Officer, City of Fremantle), Dr. Richard Walley and Aunty Mingli McGlade. We’ve also been lucky enough to have had a few regular members who are specialist Noongar language teachers. It has been so very touching to see everyone’s involvement in WK, from volunteering to help with organising the songsheets, welcoming new members, setting up the room to bringing something to share for supper. We’re also very grateful for the continued support from MMers in particular moorditj yoorga Jemma, Cathi and Jo!

We had a great end to the term with a joint performance with Madjitil Moorna at the City of Fremantle’s NAIDOC Week opening event on 7th July at our old haunt, PCYC, Fremantle. For many WKer’s it was their first public performance, and while it started with many jostling for a coveted back row position, there were many smiles and full hearts post-gig!

A last highlight for WK has been being shortlisted as one of eight applicants (out of a total 27) for the Impact100 Fremantle grant. We’ve made it through to the second round which includes the submission of a detailed application and a site visit from donors in July & August respectively. After this, donors will select just four finalists for the last round in November, which involves giving a 10-minute pitch to donors who will then vote for one lucky recipient to receive $100,000!

With current funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, WK are looking forward to 3 more terms, taking us to April 2020.
Madjitil Moornatag:madjitilmoorna.org.au,2005:Post/58099222019-07-01T18:35:34+08:002019-07-01T18:35:34+08:00Koorlong Update from Kylie

Recently the Koorlog team presented songs to the Canningvale Pre-Kindy students.

We visited the centre three times for three different groups of children and each group had a very different feel. The first group was a little shy and reluctant to sit too close. The second group mobbed Kobi with cries of “Kaya” and “Wanjoo” as he walked in the door, pulling him down to read stories on the floor. The third group was difficult to get in the door from outside.

Our presenters, Keira and Cezera, are new with us and were learning to introduce songs, give instruction, set tempi and highlight certain language elements. They are learning fast!

“I’m a Yongka” is always a favourite, and we are all pretty tired by the time we’ve hopped and stopped and scratched and munched and chewed.

“Marwit” is a great song for bringing the energy of the children back down after all that hopping around. The children took delight in rocking their teddies (and bilbies) whist they sang quietly.

When Kobi announced that we were singing “We Are One”, many children started to hold three fingers up to tell us that they were three. This made us realise that they were literally interpreting the title of the song and lead to further explanation that we are all one big family or moort.

The children had been well prepared and could sing the lyrics of “Nidja Noongar Boodja Koort”, thanks to the assistance of their teacher, Lisa, and we could still hear the strains of this song, being hummed as we left the room.

Sisters Maureen Foster and Gloria Bliss did the banner design, using the Koolbardi (magpie) logo and adding yarning circles, pathways and footprints. Choir members put their hand-prints in the half-finished canvas and decorated them. Then the ladies took it home and tied it all together, colour and design-wise. Gorgeous isn’t it! Years later they re-did it with more waterproof paint and with the help of upper Primary kids at Maureen’s school (she’s an Ab’l Ed Officer at a Bungaree ps in Rockingham.) Fab women!

The Kannajil Workshops in Hazelmere were a gentle introduction to the Noongar language, led by Kobi Morrison. The introduction to the workshops was by way of a Welcome to Country by Ted Wilkes. He gave some fascinating insights into his culture and explained the significance of the smoking ceremony with his niece Leonie. Participants took part in the smoking ceremony, intrigued and fascinated while the smoke wafted around them.

Della Rae Morrison addressing the Kannajil participants after the smoking ceremony led by Ted Wilkes (2nd on the right)

Some participants came each week, others to one or two sessions. Everyone was intrigued by the language and all I believe, enjoyed the explanations and translations. A Maori woman and her children relaxed more as each session unfolded and enjoyed it more each time. The children embraced the language and were often the first to venture the translated word. Another participant joined in at the Walyalup Kannajil/Madjitil Moorna/Koorlong event at City Farm and told me it was a wonderful event.

One week a 94 year old came and thanked everyone and said she applauded wholeheartedly what we were doing and what we were achieving. As part of the practice for The Sorry Song, while part of The Apology was read out, she broke down sobbing, so strongly did she feel about it. She had many Aboriginal friends and connections long ago in the north of the state.

The week after that, while we sewed desert hibiscus commemorative flowers to give to the Stolen Generations on Sorry Day, Uncle Alan Kickett came and told some of his history and the history of the area. Two participants sat spellbound. They stopped their sewing and listened to him, obviously fascinated by his depth of knowledge, his passion and his commitment to his culture.

The participants are looking forward to the final workshop on June 8 and were happy to do “something different” whatever that may turn out to be.
Madjitil Moornatag:madjitilmoorna.org.au,2005:Post/52600232018-05-27T21:39:51+08:002021-05-10T17:08:03+08:00Sorry Day 2018
Sorry Day 2018

Kaya,

On Saturday 26th May 2018 when we sing the Sorry Song at Yagan Square, we will be remembering and celebrating Sorry Day. Sorry Day came out of the ‘Bringing Them Home’ report which was tabled in Federal Parliament in 1997. It was a report into the generations of Stolen people from Aboriginal families. This inspired songwriter Kerry Fletcher write the Sorry Song to encourage us to say ‘sorry to the people from this land’.

In 2008, Prime Minster Kevin Rudd, said a historic ‘sorry’ to the people for what the Australian government and colonists had done to them by purposely breaking up their families. Kerry added another verse to the Sorry Song to reflect the national apology. Madjitil Moorna choir sings this song every year on Sorry Day, May 26th.

The Kimberley Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation has chosen the purple desert hibiscus as symbol for Sorry Day due to the resilience of the stolen people. Like a flower that can bloom in tough situations, the survivors of the trauma are growing strong and improving understanding and wellbeing for their children and others.

Other favourites included George’s (exhausting) I’m a Yongka and Aunty Josie proudly singing her Wongatha language, beside the Noongar chorus in We Are One.
Will we do it again next year??
Thanks to Saskia for the great photos!

Madjitil Moornatag:madjitilmoorna.org.au,2005:Post/44110112016-10-09T17:07:28+08:002017-03-03T22:21:46+08:00Count-down to Kalamunda Zig Zag FestivalOn SUNDAY 30 October we'll be celebrating our 10th Anniversary performance at the ZIG ZAG FESTIVAL. Just as we did in 2006, we're planning to sing 6 new songs - this time with a primary school choir.
Performing is such a BUZZ. If you want to join us on stage, come to practice these next 3 Mondays and make sure you have audio files and lyrics to help you learn the songs in a hurry!! They aren't difficult and new people stand behind confident singers in the short term.
All welcome.
Madjitil Moornatag:madjitilmoorna.org.au,2005:Post/43715832016-09-14T21:58:07+08:002017-03-03T23:50:06+08:00Delly Stokes from Yabu Band teaches MM 'Campfires'Aunty Josie Boyle invited Delly Stokes from 'Yabu Band' to choir practice (What a gorgeous voice he has! )
we learnt two from Delly, one of which we'll be recording for CURTIN TV show, 'NOONGAR DANJOO'.
